PTs examine each individual and develop a plan of care uising treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. Physical therapists also work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility by developing fitness Why are people referred to physical therapy? • You and others may be referred to physical therapy because of a movement dysfunction associated with pain. Your difficulty with moving parts of your body very likely results in limitations with your daily life. Can my physical therapist provide me with a diagnosis? • Most states do not allow physical therapists to make a medical diagnosis. This is something your medical doctor will provide for you. Can I go directly to my physical therapist? • Yes, Maine offers direct access to physical therapy. Some state physical therapy practice acts require a diagnosis from a medical doctor before a patient can be seen.
